Western Building Construction
The series Western Building Construction introduces the evolution of building construction in Western Australia from 1829 to 1930 as essential background to the conservation of significant buildings.
​
Author Dr Ingrid van Bremen is a senior lecturer in architectural conservation at the University of Western Australia, and consulting architect in conservation.
​
All three books are available from the School of Design at University of Western Australia. Order by phone and post or collect in person at the Cullity Gallery reception.
Roofs is also available from the National Trust of Western Australia.

Western Building Construction Roofs
The book on Roofs covers roof structures with common rafters, braced timber principals, trusses, flat roofs and tower pavilions, and roof coverings of thatch, timber shingles, corrugated galvanised iron, slate, clay tiles, metal sheet and tile, asbestos cement, built-up roofing, and roof plumbing. It includes an illustrated glossary and bibliography.
Detailed descriptions of roof repair projects carried out on a selection of ten significant buildings are in included in an appendix volume provided on a CD in the back of the book.

Western Building
Construction Walls
The book on Walls is set out in five chapters covering timber frame construction, earth walls, stonework, brickwork, and concrete and steel. It includes a glossary, diagrams of joints in timber wall framing, a PWD specification of stonework (1900), and a bibliography.
Detailed descriptions of wall repair projects carried out on a selection of nine significant buildings are in included in an appendix volume provided on a CD in the back of the book.

The book on Floors & Ceilings is set out in seven chapters covering floors of timber frame & boards, iron & steel, cement and concrete, and pavements; and ceilings of timber, plaster, and metal. It includes a glossarial index and a select bibliography.

The guide concludes with a detailed glossary and bibliography.

The Codes, Lime mortars for the repair of masonry and Repointing with lime mortars, are designed to overcome the problem of Australian Standards not accepting the use of lime mortars, so that alternative Performance Solutions are required to satisfy the Building Code of Australia.
​
The Codes are written like standards & so can be used as consent tools for planning applications.
