Brief on the project. The conservation works to the Gosnells Hotel verandahs were designed by Eric Hancock a Heritage Professional and Structural Engineer, Peter Baxendale. Works were recently completed in 2022. Eric and Peter will take us on an informal tour of the verandahs and explain the underlying works.
Gosnells Hotel is significant for its aesthetic value as a fine example of Federation Filigree architecture and is in a prominent location. Built on a major intersection with Albany Highway and adjacent to the Canning River, it is a significant landmark. The place has social value for the community since 1908, for the many formal and informal social events held there. The place has historic value for its association with the period, that the locality of Gosnells was being developed.
The proposed works included replacement of existing footings, verandah floors, posts, first floor level fascia and beams structure, balustrade floor, balustrades and water collection-disposal. The works seek to return original aesthetics and form of the verandahs, as much as possible within practical, current compliance and structural requirements. The replacements are based on both the existing structure and the recreation of aesthetic elements to more conform to the 1910 photograph.
